Ballast Hoppers

Ballast Hoppers

Introduced in 1972, the 24113-24148 series wagons were the first purpose-built ballast hoppers to be ordered for Córas Iompair Éireann (CIÉ). Construction was undertaken jointly by the railway operator and Whessoe Ltd. A second batch was added to the fleet in 1974, this time built by CIÉ and Parsons Ltd, and numbered 24250-24263.

By the 1980s these vehicles had supplanted traditional wooden-bodied wagons and hoppers inherited from pre-nationalisation companies and the Great Northern Railway. They could be found on permanent way trains all over the CIÉ/Irish Rail/Iarnród Éireann network, with rakes typically operating with a ballast plough van at either end, although they could occasionally be seen in service with just one of these vehicles.
